7 Tips For Actually Enjoying the Holidays
The holidays are often portrayed as a time for celebration, family, and joy. Yet, many of us find ourselves overwhelmed by to-do lists, expectations, and guilt. I understand this struggle deeply - I’ve been there myself!
For years, I’d find myself falling ill right before Thanksgiving, only to carry that stress through the New Year. It wasn’t just coincidence; it was a response to stress and anxiety patterns that I inherited from my family. But many years ago, I made a conscious choice to break free from that cycle. I started to examine my core beliefs that fueled my stress, and I began to view the holidays through a different lens.
What are the top stressors during the holiday season? I bet none of these will come as a surprise:
Financial stress
Over-commitment
Family dynamics
Time constraints
Unrealistic expectations
Dietary temptations
Travel stress
Gift-giving pressure
Comparison (i.e. picture perfect social media lies)
Lack of self care
So what do we do?
Here are my Top 7 Tips to help you truly enjoy the holiday season!
1. Focus on Your Unique Joy
Forget about what others are doing. It’s easy to get caught up in comparisons - what others are cooking, decorating, or planning. Instead, ask yourself: What brings joy to you and your family? What memories do you want to create? Remember, your holiday experience doesn’t have to mirror anyone else’s.
2. Take Mindful Breaks
As you reflect on your family’s needs, carve out time for stillness. Reduce your social media use and embrace the present moment. Find joy in simple things, like sharing stories or enjoying a quiet cup of tea together.
3. Establish Healthy Boundaries
Setting boundaries is crucial. Decide what you are and aren’t willing to do. It’s perfectly okay to decline invitations or delegate tasks. Ask yourself: Do I truly want to do this? If it doesn’t resonate deeply, it’s okay to say no.
4. Prioritize Self-Care
Taking care of yourself is essential - not selfish. Schedule time for activities that rejuvenate you, whether it’s a bubble bath, a quiet walk, or a good book. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup.
5. Nourish Your Body & Spirit
Be sure to get enough sleep, hydration, and wholesome food. Managing stress and supporting your immune system will help keep you healthy during the holiday season. Consider adding calming herbal teas or nourishing soups to your routine.
6. Create a Thoughtful Budget
To avoid the stress of overspending, establish a budget for gifts and stick to it. Consider a “4 gift rule” for your children: something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read. This not only keeps expenses in check but also teaches appreciation for what they have.
7. Redefine Tradition
Break the mold! There are no hard set rules about holiday meals or traditions. One year, we swapped turkey for enchiladas! Embrace creativity and do what feels right for your family - this can lead to beautiful new traditions.
It's the simple pleasures - a warm cup of cocoa, a cozy hug, or a shared laugh - that truly fill our hearts with joy and reminds us of what matters most.
Navigating Family Dynamics
The holiday season often brings families together, which can be a source of joy, but it can also present unique challenges. Managing family dynamics during gatherings can be tricky, especially when differing opinions, past conflicts, or stress levels come into play. Here are some strategies to help you navigate family gatherings with grace and ease.
Set Realistic Expectations
Approach family gatherings with realistic expectations. Understand that not every interaction will be perfect and that conflicts may arise. Accepting this can help you remain calm and prepared for various dynamics.
Focus on Positivity
Make a conscious effort to focus on the positive aspects of the gathering. Engage in conversations about shared interests, fond memories, and uplifting topics. Steering conversations toward the positive can help create a more pleasant atmosphere.
Prepare for Potential Conflicts
If you anticipate certain topics may lead to conflict - politics, religion, or past grievances - prepare yourself with strategies to steer the conversation away. Have a few neutral topics in mind that you can bring up if discussions become heated.
Family dynamics may be complex, but with patience and empathy, we can transform challenges into opportunities for deeper connection and understanding.
Practice Active Listening
When family members share their thoughts or feelings, practice active listening. Show empathy and understanding, even if you disagree. This approach can diffuse tension and foster a more respectful dialogue.
Set Boundaries
Know your limits and set boundaries to protect your emotional well-being. If a particular family member tends to trigger stress or negativity, it's okay to limit your interactions with them during the gathering. Prioritize your peace of mind.
Take Breaks
If you start feeling overwhelmed, excuse yourself for a moment. Step outside for fresh air, find a quiet room, or engage in a calming activity like deep breathing. Taking short breaks can help you regain composure and clarity.
Engage in Activities
Encourage group activities that promote bonding and divert attention from potentially contentious conversations. Games, cooking together, playing with the kids, or going for a walk can help shift focus and create positive interactions.
Seek Support
If family gatherings tend to be challenging, identify a supportive family member or friend who can provide comfort. Having someone to lean on during tough moments can make the experience more manageable. Consider scheduling a holistic counseling session prior to your gathering to help lessen emotional triggers.
Practice Gratitude
Cultivating a mindset of gratitude can shift your perspective. Take time to reflect on what you appreciate about your family and the gathering. Expressing gratitude can foster a more positive atmosphere and strengthen connections.
Let Go of Perfection
Understand that family gatherings may not go perfectly, and that’s okay. Embrace the imperfections and focus on enjoying the time spent together. Sometimes, the most memorable moments come from unexpected situations.
Navigating family dynamics during holiday gatherings requires a lot of patience, empathy, and self-awareness. Take a deep breath and cherish the simple moments with the family you’ve created.
Whole Food & The Holidays
If you’re committed to a whole food lifestyle, navigating the holidays can be challenging, but entirely manageable. Here are some tips to help you enjoy the holidays while still honoring your needs.
Communicate Your Preferences
Before the holidays, share your dietary preferences with family members. Let them know about your commitment to whole foods and express your excitement about contributing to the meal. This helps set expectations and encourages others to support your choices.
Stay Hydrated
Don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the festivities. Staying hydrated can help control hunger and prevent overindulgence in sugary drinks or alcoholic beverages, which are often plentiful during holiday celebrations.
Bring Your Own Dishes
Offer to bring a few dishes to share. Preparing your favorite whole food recipes not only ensures you have options that align with your lifestyle but also introduces your family to delicious, healthy foods.
Focus on Whole Food Options
At family meals, prioritize whole food choices when filling your plate. Load up on fresh vegetables, salads, and proteins. Don’t hesitate to skip processed items or dishes that don’t fit your diet. Remember, it’s important to honor your needs.
Be Prepared For Temptations
Family gatherings often feature an array of tempting treats. If you know you might face cravings for less healthy options, prepare by having a satisfying snack before the event. This can help curb your hunger and reduce the temptation to indulge in processed foods.
Practice Mindful Eating
Holidays can be hectic, leading to mindless eating. Take time to savor each bite and enjoy the flavors of the food you choose. Mindful eating can help you feel more satisfied and prevent overeating.
Create a Support System
If you have family members who are also interested in healthy eating, partner with them to create a supportive environment. Share recipes and ideas, and encourage one another to make wholesome choices during the holidays.
Enjoy the Company, Not Just the Food
Focus on the social aspects of the holiday season rather than just the food. Engage in conversations, play games, or participate in activities with family members. Shifting your focus can help you enjoy the gathering without feeling pressure to eat excessively.
Allow Flexibility
While it’s important to stick to your whole food principles, it’s also okay to indulge occasionally. If a family member has prepared a special dish that holds sentimental value, allow yourself to enjoy it without guilt. Balance is key, and one meal won’t derail your lifestyle.
Reflect on Your Goals
After the holiday season, take some time to reflect on your experiences. Consider what worked well and what challenges you faced. Use this insight to prepare for future gatherings, ensuring you feel empowered and confident in your choices.
By preparing ahead, communicating your needs, and focusing on the joy of being with loved ones, you can enjoy the season without compromising your values. Embrace the holidays and savor the moments.
